August Update from Supervisor McKay
posted August 31, 2008
In the heat of a northern Virginia summer, it’s a stretch to be thinking about the County’s fiscal year 2010 budget that’s almost a year away. While we are fortunate to live in one of the most economically advantaged counties in the United States, we are not immune to the economic storms that are shaking the country. Foreclosures, rapidly rising fuel and electricity costs, and increases in the costs of goods and services are hitting us hard.

To Chairman Dean and my great friend Dick Durbin; and to all my fellow citizens of this great nation;
With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.
Let me express my thanks to the historic slate of candidates who accompanied me on this journey, and especially the one who traveled the farthest – a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours — Hillary Rodham Clinton. To President Clinton, who last night made the case for change as only he can make it; to Ted Kennedy, who embodies the spirit of service; and to the next Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, I thank you. I am grateful to finish this journey with one of the finest statesmen of our time, a man at ease with everyone from world leaders to the conductors on the Amtrak train he still takes home every night.

So much has happened today, but the first day of the convention was truly phenomenal- a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The day really started after the delegation breakfast meeting, when I was lucky enough to attend the Unconventional Women panel. Female leaders including Sens. Claire McCaskill and Barbara Boxer, and Republican Governor Jane Swift discussed the issue of women in politics. There was a special spin on several of the panels, focusing on young women in politics with an entire council of Colorado Girl Scouts in attendance.

It was a late night at Red Rocks last night, where music and environmentalism met with Sheryl Crow, Sugarland, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, along with speakers like Robert Kennedy Jr., our own Gov.Tim Kaine, and William McDonough, author of “Cradle to Cradle.”

This summer I participated in Stakeholder meetings to discuss issues related to the creation of riparian buffers along headwater streams. These headwater streams are located upstream of existing Resource Protection Areas (RPAs). These affect many communities throughout Fairfax County. The information gathered from these meetings will be used by the Planning Commission’s Environment Committee and the Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) to evaluate a regulatory approach to extending riparian buffers upstream of RPAs. I will be attending additional meetings related to this throughout the fall leading up to a recommendation that will be given to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

The Road to Denver

When I attended my first informal meeting of Obama supporters back in March 2007, I figured it was my first foray into politics and I’d probably just end up handing out flyers on election day or something. No big deal.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
