posted April 25, 2009

George Chancellor Rawlings Jr., a Fredericksburg attorney who became a liberal force in Virginia politics, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Funeral services are set for 3 pm Sunday at Massaponax Baptist Church in Fredericksburg (5101 Massaponax Church Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407; map, click here).
George broke the back of the Byrd Machine in Virginia by redeeming the 8th Congressional District in 1966 from Howard “Judge” Smith in a Democratic Primary on the heels of Baker v. Carr. It was the first leak in the dike of the Byrd Machine after Harry Byrd, Sr.’s death. He was a true trailblazer and he will be missed. Read more, click here.

Always supporters of the environment and environmental causes, Democrats in Lee can help support Earth Day 2009 by volunteering to plant native shrub and tree seedlings on Saturday April 25 and Sunday April 26th from 10 am to 2 pm each day in the Thompson Creek Riparian Planting on the Mason Neck peninsula. This area is part of the Lower Potomac Planning District ( and includes drainage from our own Huntley Meadows Park whose watershed includes Dogue Creek, Barnyard Run and Little Hunting Creek.
Uncontrolled storm water is devastating and the plantings make a huge difference. Be part of the solution! Read more

Stand Up for Virginia

$125,000,000.
That’s how much of our money won’t be coming here to help struggling Virginia families, thanks to a partisan maneuver by Bob McDonnell and the Virginia House Republicans.
They chose to reject $125 million of our federal stimulus money, sending it back to Washington instead of boosting Virginia’s economy and helping Virginia families.
It’s time for us to Stand Up for Virginia. Read more
