Attention on aisle 3: Yes, Safeway shoppers, that is U.S. Rep. James P. Moran.
Moran is bagging groceries today at the Safeway at the Bradlee Shopping Center in Alexandria from noon to 1. Why? Well, because who doesn’t enjoy having a powerful person bag their groceries? Also, to help out Safeway’s annual campaign to fight prostate cancer.
The company raises money each year to aide prostate cancer research–it’s raised almost $42 million over the last nine years. Appearances like Moran’s raise awareness and encourage giving.
Va. Democratic Party Hit With Fine

The Democratic Party of Virginia has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine to the Federal Election Commission, related to deficiencies in the party’s financial disclosure forms dating to 2006.
The FEC reports that they found problems with DPV’s financial disclosure forms through routine reviews of their filings. The FEC said it sent DPV 31 different requests for additional information related to its 2006 filings, of which the party failed to respond, responded inadequately or responded late to 16. Problems included mathematical discrepancies and some excessive or impermissible contributions.
According to the settlement agreement which you can read here (http://eqs.nictusa.com/eqsdocs/29190281428.pdf), DPV acknowledged it had reporting problems in the past but said it had hired more experienced staff and rectified problems. They also agreed to hire a compliance specialist and attend an FEC conference.
Leigh Anne Collier, who took over as the party’s interim director just last week, says the party has paid the fine, which was due June 28, and overhauled its process for complying with FEC guidelines. That included bringing on a new accounting firm and other new staff.
"We wanted to put all of this behind us," she said. "We have paid the fine and have completely revamped our system, and we’re happy with the system we’ve put in place."
You can read all the documents related to this issue here (http://eqs.nictusa.com/eqs/searcheqs?SUBMIT=continue).
Such settlements only become public at the end of a rather lengthy period of negotiations with the FEC. The fine is low, but it’s altogether bad timing for DPV, which is gearing up now to support the Creigh Deeds campaign for governor.
To wit, Republican Party of Virginia spokesman Tim Murtaugh offers this response: "Without having looked into it fully, it sounds significant and particularly negligent and cheating is never allowed."

Message from Interim FCDC Chair Lola Quintela
posted June 29, 2009
Fellow Democrats,
How many times have you told yourself, coming home from work late in the evening on a Friday, “What a week!”? I guess today we can all say a collective, “What a week!”
Delegate Kris Amundson´s decision not to seek reelection triggered a series of events that directly affected the FCDC family. Scott stepped down from the Chairmanship to start a new and exciting endeavor and we will miss him. A lot. Fortunately, FCDC´s bench is deep. We have talented, committed, and passionate Democrats ready to take on the baton for the next leg of the journey. With everybody´s help we will turn the House of Delegates blue this November and we will keep the Governor´s Mansion.
There will be a few more changes still to come as we elect a new Chair on July 28. But I am confident that the institution will emerge as strong and effective as ever, ready to push forward the agenda that the Blue Team promised to implement when it was elected in January of last year. Since Scott´s resignation last Wednesday, the Steering Committee has met to approve a call for caucus, we have purchased new computers for the office, as called for in the business plan, and we are close to hiring all the organizers for our Red to Blue campaign. We are not slowing down!
Thank you for your help, support and understanding during this transition. Now, let´s keep our eyes on the prize, roll up our sleeves and get some good Democrats elected. Let´s make Scott proud.
Sincerely,
Lola Quintela
Interim Chair, FCDC

Lee District Fireworks
posted June 29, 2009
Lee District Park will not be hosting fireworks for July 4th 2009; however, there are other venues hosting fireworks – see more below.
Lee District 4th Celebration 2009
from the Lee District Supervisor’s office
For many years, the Fourth of July has featured a fireworks show at Lee District Park. However, County budget cutbacks along with the construction of turf fields funded through the last park bond have made the park off bounds for any fireworks. However, the Fourth of July is a time for families and neighbors to come together and celebrate not only our nation’s birthday but also to strengthen community ties. Lee District Park will still host a Fourth of July celebration. This year, there will be a family-friendly musical program (provided by M&R Project and the Annandale Brass Ensemble) in the park amphitheater from 3-5 pm on the afternoon of July 4th. For details call Lee District Supervisor’s office 703-971-6262.
Alternative Locations (see more information below):
- Lake Fairfax
- Fort Belvoir (not open to public)
- National Mall
- City of Alexandria (on July 11th)
Surovell for Delegate
posted June 28, 2009
I am writing to request your help in a new challenge – my campaign for the 44th District of the Virginia House of Delegates in the Mt. Vernon/US 1 area of Fairfax County.
Unexpectedly, this past Wednesday, my delegate for the last ten years, Kris Amundson, announced that she was retiring. Delegate Amundson has been an highly effective and dedicated leader for our area and her decision was very tough one for her to make. After discussing the situation with my wife and family, I have decided to declare my candidacy for this seat.
