Why “Change that Works?”
Americans have spoken powerfully for change — change that both revives our failing economy and builds it stronger, and fairer, for the future. An economy where hard work means you can make a good living and fulfill your dreams instead of treading water or falling behind.

Change that Works SEIU (Service Employees International Union) will involve millions of Americans in an intensive state-by-state campaign to help President Obama enact Change That Works — change that gets our economy back on track now, and for generations to come.

Our Goals

  • Pass an economic recovery plan to keep people working, create millions of new jobs, and maintain services for our communities.
  • Pass the Employee Free Choice Act to ensure that workers, not just CEOs, can benefit from the economic progress they help create and advocate for the best quality for those they serve.
  • Fix our healthcare system so that it lowers costs and provides quality, affordable health care for all.

OFA Supporting Health Care

posted July 24, 2009

OFAOFA is focusing heavily on the health care reform movement that’s underway this Summer, and we have several canvasses and phone banks coming up that I wanted you to be aware of.

Folks from all over the state will be meeting up and making phone calls/knocking doors to collect declarations of support for the President’s 3 principles on health care reform. He has said he wants a bill that:

  • Reduces rising health care costs for families and businesses
  • Guarantees the freedom to choose a plan and a doctor, including the choice of a public option
  • Ensures affordable, quality care for every American man, woman, and child

They’ll also be asking people to share their health care stories, so that their voices can be heard as government officials debate the best way to move forward with reform.

If you think you’ll have time to volunteer for one of these events, please check out the following links:

Of course, you can find many more opportunities to volunteer in your area by going to my.barackobama.com and putting in your zip code. Take a look, find something that fits into your schedule, and help make a difference at this crucial time in the health care reform effort.

Be on the lookout for OFA listening tours near you as well.

Surovell Open House

posted July 18, 2009

A well-attended and very positive crowd attended Scott’s Campaign HQ open house Saturday, July 18th.

Scott told us about his vision for moving the District forward, and how he has been knocking on lots of doors. He related his door-to-door experiences, in particular how people understand Scott’s position for personal investment to solve the transportation problem, not another study like his opponent proposes (“It’s time to commission a new study with realistic goals based upon the existing parameters in place“).

Surovell Means Business

A candidate for only 10 days and Scott has:

  • a fully functional HQ with campaign manager, field operations and finance,
  • a massive endorsement list:
    Gov. Tim Kaine
    U.S. Senator Jim Webb
    U.S. Senator Mark Warner
    Rep. Jim Moran
    Rep. Gerry Connolly
    Sen. Toddy Puller
    Delegate Kris Amundson
    Supervisor Gerry Hyland
  • personally knocked on almost 1,000 doors (been out door knocking every night)
  • raised more than twice as much money as his opponent (who has been a candidate for months and including the amount his opponent personally has given his own campaign)
  • a complete web site, Surovell2009.com, delineating Scott’s concerns and positions
  • signs, lapel stickers, bumper stickers
  • LOTs of volunteers (but needs tons more)

The campaign HQ is in the Mt. Vernon Plaza Shopping Center, between Blockbuster and the Barber facing Fordson Rd (7650 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306; click here for a map).
