Special Elections

posted November 27, 2009

The General Elections of November 3rd have triggered two special elections in Fairfax:

  1. Dave Marsden for State Senator 37th District [election of Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37th) for Attorney General; current information is that Ken Cuccinelli will wait until mid-January to resign his Senate seat], and
  2. Mason District School Board [electon of Mason District School Board Member Kaye Kory to the House of Delegates (D-38th)]. Currenty there are three candidates for this race, two who are seeking the Democratic endorsement: Sandy Evans and Herb Smith (school board is a non-partisan race; however, candidates frequently seek and are endorsed by political parties).

It is probable that the two special elections will be held at the same time, January 12, 2010.

If you helped at the polls on Election Day,  it’s likely you saw the mean spiritedness of the other side. Those who called our volunteers socialists and communists, who clearly are tuned in to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Dr. Laura. We were fortunate to win Delegate seats this year – still for net loss, but the Virginia Senate consists of 40 members, and our majority is razor thin. The election of Senator George Barker (D-39th) in 2007 tipped the balance barely: 21 Democrats and 19 Republicans. Remember too that any tie in the Senate is broken with a vote by the Lieutenant Governor (re-elected Republican Bill Bolling), so that the Democrats hold only a one-seat majority, a margin that could easily be erased if McDonnell were to persuade a Democrat in a vulnerable district to join his administration, and there is serious talk of just that. The venom-laden, still emboldened opposition is out to claim the 37th. Read more

Democratic Party of Virginia

Dear Democrats,

I want to say thank you for everything you have done this year for the Democratic Party of Virginia and our Democratic candidates.

With the countless hours you spent working in campaign offices, knocking doors, making phone calls and talking to friends and neighbors, you are truly the heart and soul of this party.

You joined so many great partners –  President Obama, the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and countless others.  I am truly thankful, and I know that Creigh, Jody and Steve are as well.

For the past eight years Virginia has been on a path of success – one that earned it repeated recognition as the ‘Best State for Business,’ the ‘Best Managed State’ and the ‘Best State to Raise a Child.’  And, while the nation at large is suffering in a difficult economy, superior management has enabled Virginia to weather the storm far better than most states.

The pragmatic, results-oriented leadership of Tim Kaine, Mark Warner, Jim Webb and so many other Virginia Democratic leaders is the reason for this success and I look forward to working with President Obama, our two Democratic U.S. Senators, our six Democratic Congressmen, Democrats in the General Assembly, and all of you to keep Virginia moving forward.

Thank you for everything you do to support the Democratic Party of Virginia and our values.

Sincerely,

C. Richard Cranwell
Chairman, Democratic Party of Virginia

Election 2009

Lee District turns out for Democrats and soundly keeps all four Delegate seats in Democratic control. Surovell wins open seat (Amundson – 44th District), and Lee precincts are a key to that success. Democrats winning strongly in Lee District is not a mistake or a fluke, particularly for our Delegates. Demonstrating a record of positive achievement for the constituents of their Districts and for the citizens of the Commonwealth is public service to be proud of, and voters wish for them to continue these positive efforts on their behalf.

Election 2009

Forward, backward, following in the footsteps of so and so, transportation plan, negative / postive campaign, Democrat, Republican, Independent. It’s not about looks, or speaking style and it sure better not matter who might have a ‘better plan’ for something, because we expect the state legislature to put forward the best plan no matter its origin.

What matters is philosophical: what values do you hold to be important in your daily life and for the future of our children? There is a chasm of difference among the candidates, and “it is imperative to understand the distinction between the philophies [-Sen. Jim Webb]” in this campaign.

  • Do you value public education?
  • Do you believe that all citizens have equal value and potential?
  • Do you believe that the role of government is to work on behalf of all citizens in ways that individuals and corporations cannot or will not?
  • Do you believe that our future in the Commonwealth and the world is impacted by our perspective on protecting the environment?
  • Do you believe that is better to pay for things now rather than burden our children with debt, and that taxation is not a bad thing, but a civic responsibility?

These are values that DEMOCRATS truly hold, not just pay lip-service to. Just imagine FOUR years under an administration that not only does not value these ideals, but will actively work against them.

This election is NOT about who looks best, who has the best commercials, who campaigns positively or negatively, about which campaign was the smartest; it IS about the values that the candidates have embraced over the years to be part of their core beliefs. It is these beliefs and consistency of record that we MUST judge them on. IF you believe these to be true, you must vote for the Democratic candidates, but more importantly it is imperative that you do everything in these last hours to help them get elected. It is not sufficient to merely vote for them if you are passionate about these ideals – you have got to work to make them succeed. You can work on Election Day at the polls, make phone calls, canvass, or any number of other necessary activities. Thanks to everyone for your work to date, but we’re not done, and in this final stretch we must take action to prevail.

What can you do to help your Commonwealth?

LeeDems Deplore Sign Vandalism

posted November 1, 2009

Lee District Democratic Committee Co-Chair, Steve Bunn, spoke with his Republican counterpart on Saturday to reassure the opposition campaigns that recent sign vandalism (cutting down of large signs) was not done or condoned by the Democratic Committee or it’s members.

Democrats have always believed in a vigorous debate over ideas and certainly do not countenance any destructive acts like these to further their cause.
