Celebrating Women’s Rights
Mar 8th, 2011 | By LDDC | Category: Women's Rights
March is National Women’s History Month that highlights contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. March 8th is International Women’s Day, and today is the centennial observance of this special Day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
Suffragettes campaigned for women’s right to vote. The word ‘Suffragette’ is derived from the word “suffrage” meaning the right to vote. International Women’s Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women’s success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women’s Day was in 1911.
