2010 DPVA Jefferson-Jackson Weekend

Jefferson Jackson

The Democratic Party of Virginia is excited to announce that we have expanded our Jefferson-Jackson Weekend this year. During the weekend, Democrats from across the commonwealth will gather to build for Virginia’s future in 2010 and beyond.

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) will be our keynote speaker. First elected in 2006, Senator Klobuchar has been described as “a rising star” by The Washington Post and Politico calls her “bring-down-the-house funny.” She has been a strong ally to President Obama and is a leader in the Senate in the areas of consumer-protection, law enforcement and veteran’s affairs.

DPVA Quarterly Meetings Postponed

posted February 3, 2010

The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) State Steering Committee and State Central Committee meetings scheduled for February 5-6 have been postponed due to inclement weather coming our way starting Friday. The meetings will be rescheduled for March 19-20. Please save the date for this important weekend, because it will also be the Jefferson Jackson Weekend. This news was to be announced at the meetings this weekend, but due to the postponement, DPVA Staff and Chairman Cranwell wanted you to know well in advance. More details about ticketing, programming, and trainings will be coming soon, but please save the weekend and alert your local committee members and other interested parties.

For those of you who have reserved hotel rooms already, you need to call the Marriott at 804-643-3400 to either cancel or reschedule. If you do not notify the hotel of a change, then you will be billed for Friday night.

24 Hours of (United) Democrats

Unity Wburg 2009 026Back from Williamsburg after attending the DPVA Steering Committee (Friday night), DPVA State Central Committee (Saturday am), Unity Rally (Saturday noon), and Democratic Black Caucus Juneteenth Dinner (Saturday night).  I’ve never seen Virginia Democrats so united behind their ticket.  50% of Democratic voters had Creigh Deeds as their first choice for governor – - at least 45% had him as their second choice, and that makes it very easy to unify behind Creigh.  He is an experienced, moderate, enthusiastic, and innovative leader who will be a great governor.  Likewise Jody Wagner (Lt. Gov.) and Steve Shannon (Attorney Gen.) have overwhelming support among Virginia Democrats – sometimes statewide tickets have had some tension among the candidates – not this time.  Jody and Steve will help Creigh win and govern.  The State Central Committee featured officer elections, with only one contest, and all with a positive spirit.  (See below.)

DPVA Central Committee Ends Term

posted February 16, 2009

The 2005-2009 Democratic Party of Virginia State Central Committee wrapped up its business in connection with Jefferson-Jackson Day Weekend on February 7, 2009 in Richmond.  It has been a very successful four years for the party which saw the election of Governor Kaine, Senators Webb and Warner, a Democratic majority in the Virginia’s Congressional delegation, a Democratic majority in Virginia’s State Senate, and a narrowing of the GOP majority in the State House.  Secretary Pixie Bell, who has been keeping the Committee straight for 16 years announced her retirement.  Treasurer Jim Turpin, who over the past four years, has had extraordinary success in raising money, spearheaded the party’s purchase of its Richmond headquarters, and kept members informed of progress also announced that he would not seek reelection.  They will both be deeply missed, but we know that they will remain active Democrats.  Other officers have not announced their plans.  A new Central Committee will be elected this spring and will elect new party officers in June.
