Thank the GOP for Iraq

On the occasion of President Obama’s speech, the Republican leadership decided they and President Bush should get more credit, especially for the surge in troops that was supposed to lead to an Iraqi government and hasn’t.

Rachel Maddow made this assessment of the war in Iraq:

Two American things have been accomplished in Iraq. Tens of thousands, more than a million Americans served their country in a horrible war for seven and a half years under horrible circumstances and under political leadership that was not honest about why they had been sent there. Those Americans are to be honored for what they did and what they gave and they are to be taken care of as veterans now that they’re home.

The other accomplishment in Iraq is that we have finally found a way to leave, to get combat troops out, now.

Those two accomplishments belong to this president, who’s overseeing the withdrawal from Iraq, and to the people who served — the people who served honorably for these seven and a half long years.

Credit for all the rest of it, for the made-up reasons for going in, for going in in the first place, for letting Afghanistan spill out of control in favor of this war, for the constant revisions for the justifications for war to obfuscate the craven petty radicalism that really started — Republicans, you guys can go right ahead and take that credit. Go right ahead. Credit where credit is due.

Republicans, this one’s yours. It’s got your name on it.

Franconia Elementary, Still A 2010 Polling Place

Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay’s office confirmed with Judy Flaig from the Fairfax County Board of Elections that despite the construction at Franconia Elementary School it will still be the same poll location for Van Dorn precinct for the November 2nd General Election. The entrance, parking and exact location within the school may be different than previous years, check back for updates.

Smoke, Mirrors and Alcohol

The centerpiece of Bob McDonnell’s transportation plan is the privatization of the State’s ABC stores (Washington Post, 7.21.2009), but even when it was proposed it was an idea begging for merit.

In two columns today, in the Washington Post and Richmond Times-Dispatch, the ABC privatization notion under further scrutiny looks increasinly less and less palatable. Honestly this is no surprise.

What is disheartening is that people liked and voted for Bob McDonnell because he had a “transportation plan”. It was not well thought out, it was not endorsed by any notable transportation experts, and the plan would not even solve Virginia’s transportation problems. Nothing new: a pretty candidate, running for office and telling people he had easy solutions to their problems. When times are tough and people are looking for answers there is a tendency to look for scapegoats and easy solutions.

Lee District Park will not be hosting fireworks for July 4th 2010; however, there are other venues hosting fireworks – see more below.

from the Fairfax County Park Authority

Lake Fairfax Park will be the one and only site for fireworks presented by the Fairfax County Park Authority on Independence Day.

The Fairfax County Park Authority has fun in mind for this Fourth of July! At Lake Fairfax Park in Reston the fun begins at 10 a.m. Visitors can picnic in the park, ride a horse on the antique carousel, travel around the lake on a paddle boat or take a leisurely ride on the tour boat. The marina and carousel will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole will be open at 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. you can sponsor a duck and participate in the Park Foundation’s Toy Duck Races celebrating the Park Authority’s 60th anniversary. Vendors will offer a variety of food for purchase throughout the celebration, and children will find a moonbounce and other amusements. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. Celebrants are encouraged to come early as parking is limited.

Fort Belvoir

Freedom Fest 2010 is Sunday, 4 July at Freemont Field (on Rte.1) on Fort Belvoir. Festivities begin a 5:00 p.m. and fireworks begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. Arrive early to receive free 3D glasses for the fireworks show. The activities and fireworks are available to those who already have access to Fort Belvoir (eligible MWR patrons: soldiers, families, dependents, DoD civilians and contractors), but the Fourth of July activities are not open to the public. National Mall

4th of July Fireworks on the National Mall at dark, usually around 9:15 p.m. The fireworks are launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and light up the sky over the Washington Monument.

A Capitol Fourth Concert
8 – 9:30 p.m. (Admittance begins at 3 p.m.)
West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol

A 4th of July tradition in the nation’s capital includes a live concert by the National Symphony Orchestra and several pop artists performing patriotic music on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building. The concert and show is followed by a spectacular display of fireworks over the Washington Monument. The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary. The annual event is broadcast live on PBS with a repeat airing at 9:30-11:00 p.m. The concert will also be broadcast over National Public Radio on WAMU – 88.5 FM.

The City of Alexandria celebrates its own birthday and the USA’s each year on the Saturday following the 4th of July. The annual event includes children’s activities, a concert performed by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, birthday cake and a fireworks extravaganza. You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, but you are welcome to bring a picnic.

Jefferson Jackson Dinner
Democratic Committees across the country hold annual Jefferson Jackson Dinners (commonly referred to as JJ). These are usually the notable signature fundraising events attracting members, interested parties, elected officials and high profile speakers.

In addition to the dinner there will be a presentation of awards for (nominations due May 11th):

Magisterial District Committee of the Year
Committee Member of the Year
Volunteer of the Year
Senator Charles S. Robb Young Leaders Award recognizing the efforts of a young leader to promote Democratic politics and candidates
Lynda J. Robb Community Service Award recognizing efforts to serve the larger community

As always there will be a program and ads for the program are due by May 11th.
