Fairfax, VA — In the latest sign that he is too extreme for Northern Virginia, Keith Fimian joined his political patron John Boehner in opposing the tough new Wall Street reforms approved by the House of Representatives last week. Choosing to side with Wall Street special interests, Fimian announced his opposition to reform that put consumers first, holds the Biggest Banks accountable, and ends the era of tax-payer funded bailouts and ‘too-big-to-fail’ institutions. Fimian announced his opposition to stopping big bonuses on Wall Street and a stop to the type of risky financial deals that led to the current economic mess.

“Keith Fimian’s outrageous refusal to hold Wall Street special interests accountable or put a stop to the era of taxpayer funded bailouts and big bonuses is another reminder that Fimian’s extreme agenda is wildly out of touch with the needs of Northern Virginia families,” said James Walkinshaw, Connolly’s campaign manager. “Hardworking families who played by the rules and saw their jobs and savings wiped away by Wall Street’s recklessness deserve better than Fimian wanting to put Wall Street banks and credit card companies first.”

Background

Highlights of Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protect Action:

Consumer Protection: Grants the Federal Reserve authority to ensure American consumers get clear, accurate information. Americans deserve to know the truth as shop for mortgages, credit cards, and other financial products, and these new protections will shield them from hidden fees, abusive terms, and deceptive practices.

Ends Bailouts: Taxpayers will not be asked to support a firm threatening the economy ever again. This bill creates a safe way to liquidate failed banks, and imposes tough new requirements to stop banks from getting too big.

Transparency & Accountability: Eliminates loopholes for hedge funds, mortgage brokers, over-the-counter derivatives, asset- backed securities, and payday lenders.

Executive Compensation: Empowers shareholders to voice their concerns on executive pay and corporate affairs with a non-binding vote on executive compensation and golden parachutes.

Protects Investors: Provides tough new rules for transparency and accountability for credit rating agencies.

Enforces Existing Law: Empowers regulators to aggressively pursue financial fraud, conflicts of interest and manipulation of the system.

            Source: House Financial Services Committee

In an interview published in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Republican Leader John Boehner criticized the financial regulatory overhaul compromise as an ‘overreaction’ to the financial crisis that triggered the recession. Boehner said of Wall Street reform, “This is killing an ant with a nuclear weapon.” [Pittsburg Tribune Review; 06/29/10]

… to Shield Bickering Primary Candidates’ Views from Public Scrutiny — and Avoid a Rand Paul Moment

Democrats Say Fimian and Herrity Taking Extreme Positions in their Race to the Right

Eleventh District Republicans canceled their biennial Convention this weekend — two weeks before their congressional primary — to shield the public from the extreme views, bare-knuckles brawling, and increasingly nasty attacks that have marked the race to the right between congressional challengers Keith Fimian and Pat Herrity, Democrats said.

The Republicans announced they canceled the event, which could draw more than 2,600 delegates, because "scheduling problems" precluded the appearance of either candidate at the convention and they had no races for party offices, but the chairs of the Democratic party organizations in the 11th CD had a different take.

"In most primaries, candidates would salivate at the chance to speak to a couple of thousand party activists and throw them some red meat to win votes just two weeks before a low turnout primary," Fairfax County Democratic Committee Chair Rex Simmons said. "Unfortunately, what they are saying to the GOP party faithful now is definitely not what they want to public to hear in November."

Fimian and Herrity have been espousing extreme positions on numerous issues that are way out of the mainstream here in Northern Virginia, the Democratic leaders said.

"These candidates want to abolish the Department of Education and turn back transportation dollars. Those are not what’s needed in Northern Virginia as we work to protect our quality schools and find ways to solve some of the worst traffic congestion problems in the nation," Prince William County Democratic Committee Chair Pete Frisbie said.

"The Fimian and Herrity campaigns want to run their primary campaigns underneath the radar," said Simmons. "They don’t want mainstream voters who will cast ballots in November to hear their far-right rhetoric about who is more pro-gun or pro-life, and who would refuse the most funding for our schools, our roads, and our public transit systems."

The Democrats suspect that Republicans canceled the event because they didn’t want to draw media attention at their congressional convention to Fimian and Herrity’s extreme campaign platforms or a catfight between the two candidates, particularly in light of Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul’s recent controversial remarks in the media disparaging civil rights.

The District Democratic Convention shall be organized in the following manner. All Democrats who are registered voters within the district may attend the District Convention. The Convention attendees will sign-in between 9:00 am and 10:00 am and have their names checked against a registered voters list for their jurisdiction.
There shall be three permanent committees of the Convention. Temporary committees are formed prior to the convention and typically elected to permanent status at the Convention.

Rules
The role of the Rules Committee is to ensure that the District Convention operates efficiently in the carrying out its duties, primarily in electing new State Central Committee members, and in making sure that we have a good and Democratic convention. The 8th CD Temporary Rules Committee will be headed by Arlington’s and Virginia’s DNC member Frank Leone.

Resolutions
After the public hearings are held, the Temporary Resolutions Committee will consider and report those resolutions which they believe should be submitted to the 2009 District Convention. The Temporary Resolutions Committee is elected by the 2009 District Convention as the Permanent Resolutions Committee. The Chair of the Temporary Rules Committee is former Delegate Dick Hobson of Alexandria.

Credentials
The Credentials Committee will hold two meetings with regard to the arrangements and the preparation of credentials for the convention. Each jurisdiction will provide an updated registered voter list on a laptop(s) to register attendees at the convention. The Chair of the Temporary Resolutions Committee is PJ Palmer-Johnson of Alexandria. PJ, like Dick Hobson, chaired her committee in the presidential year of 2008.
