Robert Kennedy’s words, spoken in hope, mirror those spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial when he shared his dream with the world 40 years ago.

The annual Virginia Kennedy-King dinner, sponsored by the Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee, celebrates Robert Kennedy’s and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision. It is an event to honor those Virginians who strive to make the hopes and dreams of these two great leaders a reality. It is a time to reflect on how both of these men continue to touch our lives as Democrats and live in our hearts as Virginians. The monies raised by the event go towards our effort to support Virginia’s Democrats.

Virginia “Pixie” Bell is one of the most well-known and  strongest Democrats in Northern Virginia. Governors, Senators, and Congressman call her their friend. Pixie has served in numerous offices in the Democratic Party, and currently is First Vice Chair of the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee.

Notably, she served four 4-year terms as Secretary of the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA), and recently at the quarterly meeting of the DPVA in Charlottesville she was honored for this service.

On June 11th DPVA Chairman, Dickie Cranwell, presented Pixie with a plaque honoring that remarkable service.

Through your leadership as a member of the Steering Committee, the Democratic Party of Virginia has grown and achieved incredible successes. Virginia Democrats thank you for you years of exemplary service and continued work on the Central Committee. 

His new book, With Honor in Hand, is the tale of two friends battling with a serious moral dilemma- a fight between the code of their profession vs. their code of honor. Mercenaries, the two friends, Douglas “Big Mac” Pollard and Amos Man Killer Stewart, are the truest of professionals and the best at what they do. They have never reneged on a contract, but now find themselves in a position where they wish they could exercise that option.

DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FROM VIRGINIA’S EIGHTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT IS CONGRESSMAN JIM MORAN

Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee Chair Margo E. Horner announced today that only one Democratic candidate, James P. Moran, Jr. filed to run in the Democratic Primary on June 8, and submitted a filing fee and 1,000 signatures of qualified registered voters in Virginia’s Eighth Congressional District.

Since Congressman Jim Moran was the only candidate to meet the filing requirements, Horner announced that “there is now no need for a Democratic primary.  The Democratic Primary scheduled for June 8 has been cancelled.".

"We are very pleased, said Horner, "to have Congressman Jim Moran as our nominee.  Jim has served with great distinction for nearly twenty years."

  • The one person considering a bid against Congressman Moran, Ronald Mitchell, did not qualify for certification (less than 1,000 petition signatures from qualified voters in the 8th CD).
• 10th CD — Jeff Barnett
  • Richard Anthony dropped out to have back surgery, leaving Jeff Barnett unopposed.
• 11th CD — Gerry Connolly (incumbent)
  • No candidate filed to run against Congressman Connolly.

Ronald Mitchell was disqualified for not having 1,000 signatures of qualified voters in the 8th Congressional District as required.

Two candidates have submitted their petitions, Declaration of Candidacy and a receipt showing that their filing fee has been paid to the State Board of Elections: James P. Moran, Jr. (incumbent) and Ronald Mitchell.

The local registrars will review the petitions ensuring that there are 1,000 signatures of qualified voters in the Eighth Congressional District from each candidate, and once the 1,000 signatures’ number for a candidate is met, then their work will stop on that candidate.

Margo Horner, Chair of the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee, must then submit the Certification of Candidates Form to the State Board of Elections by Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 5 pm.
