GOVERNOR KAINE SETS DATE FOR HOUSE OF DELEGATES SPECIAL ELECTION

~ Special election in 41st House district to be held March 2, 2010 ~

RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine has set Tuesday, March 2, 2010, as the date for voters in the 41st House of Delegates District to select a successor to Delegate David W. Marsden.

“It is important that the voters of the 41st district have a voice in the legislative process,” Governor Kaine said. “Holding the special election on March 2 will not only give voters time to learn about the candidates, but will allow for the distribution and return of ballots from voters overseas, including our men and women in the armed forces.”

The 41st House of Delegates District includes part of Fairfax County. The deadline for candidates to file to run for the seat is Friday, January 29, 2010.

Special Elections

posted November 27, 2009

The General Elections of November 3rd have triggered two special elections in Fairfax:

  1. Dave Marsden for State Senator 37th District [election of Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37th) for Attorney General; current information is that Ken Cuccinelli will wait until mid-January to resign his Senate seat], and
  2. Mason District School Board [electon of Mason District School Board Member Kaye Kory to the House of Delegates (D-38th)]. Currenty there are three candidates for this race, two who are seeking the Democratic endorsement: Sandy Evans and Herb Smith (school board is a non-partisan race; however, candidates frequently seek and are endorsed by political parties).

It is probable that the two special elections will be held at the same time, January 12, 2010.

If you helped at the polls on Election Day,  it’s likely you saw the mean spiritedness of the other side. Those who called our volunteers socialists and communists, who clearly are tuned in to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Dr. Laura. We were fortunate to win Delegate seats this year – still for net loss, but the Virginia Senate consists of 40 members, and our majority is razor thin. The election of Senator George Barker (D-39th) in 2007 tipped the balance barely: 21 Democrats and 19 Republicans. Remember too that any tie in the Senate is broken with a vote by the Lieutenant Governor (re-elected Republican Bill Bolling), so that the Democrats hold only a one-seat majority, a margin that could easily be erased if McDonnell were to persuade a Democrat in a vulnerable district to join his administration, and there is serious talk of just that. The venom-laden, still emboldened opposition is out to claim the 37th. Read more

74 days. 74 days until the November 3rd General Election. Moving Virginia forward with the pro-business economic policies of Mark Warner, or taking us backwards with the economic policies of George W. Bush. That’s what this election is about.

For weeks, Bob McDonnell’s gone around the Commonwealth deliberately misleading voters about the agenda he’ll bring to the governor’s office. And since the primary, he’s used his war chest to run TV ads that hide his dangerous record. Now is our time to learn about what’s at stake in this election.
