100 Braddock
200 Hunter Mill
300 Dranesville
400 Lee
500 Mason
600 Mt. Vernon
700 Providence
800 Springfield
900 Sully
Precinct numbering, background and a mnemonic: Just in case you are wondering why Hunter Mill is 2xx and Dranesville is 3xx, a little history lesson: Once upon a time, when the numbering scheme for districts and precincts was set up, the districts and precincts were numbered alphabetically. The first district was Annandale, the second was Centreville, the third was Dranesville, etc. When the district lines were redrawn following the 1990 census, the first two names no longer made sense, because most of Annandale was in Mason and most of Centreville was in the new district, Sully. The first district name was changed to Braddock, still keeping it first alphabetically, but the second district was named after the road that forms the boundary between it and Dranesville. The powers that be could have come up with a name that was alphabetically between Br and Dr, but since the precinct names are no longer in alphabetical order, it didn’t really matter. It wasn’t clear then how much confusion it might cause for some people who think there might be a connection between the numbering and naming systems.
